What to take away
- The US undergraduate internship is now the earliest gate: in 2026 McKinsey and Bain closed on 29 March for students graduating December 2027 to August 2028
- Every track has its own clock, so find the one for your degree, your graduation date and your office before you read any deadline list
- The first test arrives within hours or days of applying, which makes your real deadline the day you press submit
- Networking cannot start too early, but daily case drilling can: begin timed cases about eight weeks before the window closes
- If you have missed a window, check the next one and the rolling routes before you submit a rushed application
- Firms publish no single cooldown after a rejection that we could find, so read your rejection email and treat each application as one attempt
What is the consulting recruiting timeline for the 2026-27 cycle?
The pattern in one paragraph: the earlier you are in your degree, the earlier the window. US undergraduates applying for a summer internship met the first deadline in the spring of the year before they intern. McKinsey's Summer Business Analyst window ran from 1 January to 29 March 2026 for students graduating between December 2027 and August 2028, and Bain's first internship window closed the same day. BCG's undergraduate deadline was 2 June. Full-time windows for students graduating in 2026-27 came later, with BCG on 7 July, Bain on 19 July and McKinsey on 11 August. MBAs recruit in the autumn of each year, and Europe tends to roll.
| Firm | Internship (US undergraduate) | Full-time (US) |
|---|---|---|
| McKinsey | Summer Business Analyst: 1 January to 29 March 2026, for graduation between December 2027 and August 2028. Rolling review reported after the deadline | Business Analyst: closed 11 August 2026, for graduation between December 2026 and August 2027. Opening date reported as 1 June or 1 July |
| BCG | Summer Associate: 2 June 2026, reported as the only undergraduate window. BCG's own page now says the deadline has passed | Associate: 7 July 2026 |
| Bain | Associate Consultant Intern: two windows, 29 March and 31 August 2026. Bain's page asks US applicants to be on track to graduate by June 2028 | Associate Consultant: 19 July 2026, though Bain's Cornell page lists 11 October 2026 |
Two cautions on that table. We could not open McKinsey's own deadline page, so the McKinsey dates are what Tufts, Harvard and MIT career offices publish and what a university-careers newsletter attributes to the firm's site. And the Cornell line is there on purpose: the same firm can list different dates on different school pages, which is why the first job of any plan is to find the page for your campus.
How do you check a deadline before you plan around it?
Trust sources in this order: the firm's page for your school or office, your university career office, your recruiter or the firm's event email, and only then a tracker or a blog. Bain's own pages say deadlines vary by office and school. BCG's US page told us on 29 September that its deadlines had passed and gave no future dates, and one of the career offices we read notes that BCG usually announces dates close to the application period.
Trackers go wrong in two ways, and both show up in this cycle. The first is projection. One tracker updated on 16 March 2026 listed BCG's internship deadlines as 23 June and 3 September, while the career offices at Tufts and Harvard list 2 June and 7 July. The second is mislabelling. A guide to summer 2027 internships published in March 2026 and updated in July gives 11 August as McKinsey's deadline for that internship, while the career offices attach 11 August to the full-time role and 29 March to the internship. A newsletter written for university careers teams warns that shared trackers mix these up. MIT's master's-student page does list 11 August for internships, which tells you a date can be right for one track and wrong for yours.
So when you find a date, write down four things next to it: the role, the graduation window it covers, the office or school, and where you read it. If you cannot fill in all four, you do not have a deadline yet.
What does the US undergraduate cycle look like month by month?
The cycle confuses people because of the arithmetic. A student who graduates in May 2028 interns in the summer of 2027, after their junior year, and applied for that internship between 1 January and 29 March 2026, while still a sophomore. That is a gap of more than a year between the deadline and the first day of work. One secondary guide puts McKinsey's lead time at fourteen to seventeen months and says the window used to open in July to September before it moved to January. We have not verified the older pattern ourselves, so treat that as reported.
The timeline below applies the 2026 pattern to the window we expect in spring 2027, which is for students graduating between December 2028 and August 2029. Every 2027 date is a projection built on last cycle. Nothing here is announced.
The undergraduate internship cycle, projected from 2026
- Sep to Oct 2026
Meet the firms
Firm events on campus start in the autumn. Go to two or three, collect names, and write down what each person did before consulting. Your job here is to become a familiar name to one recruiter and to two people who work there.
- Nov to Dec 2026
Conversations and the CV
Ask for twenty-minute calls, one every couple of weeks, and take the CV to your career office. Winter break is the right time to read one book on structuring and start short maths drills.
- Early Jan 2027
The window is expected to open
McKinsey opened on 1 January in 2026. Do not apply on day one for the sake of it. Use the first weeks to finish the CV and a rough version of your two or three fit stories.
- Feb 2027
Timed cases begin
This is when we would start structured case practice: out loud, timed, and marked against something. The first online test can land within a day of applying, so the practice needs to be well under way by then.
- Mid Mar 2027
Submit two weeks early
In 2026 McKinsey and Bain closed on 29 March. Submitting a fortnight before leaves a buffer for a portal problem and puts you ahead of the last-day queue at offices that review on a rolling basis.
- Late Mar to May 2027
Tests, first round, final round
BCG's page says its online case follows about two weeks after the deadline for a selected group. Interview dates depend on the firm and the office, so read every invitation for the date and format.
- Jun and Aug 2027
The later windows
In 2026 BCG closed on 2 June and Bain's second internship window on 31 August. If you are not ready in spring, these are the fallback, and we return to them in the section on being late.
- Summer 2028
The internship itself
Bain's internship page says a strong performance may lead to an offer of an associate consultant position on graduation, which is why so many students treat the internship as the real application for the full-time job.
Students who graduate a year after this group meet the same cycle a year later, so the class of 2028, for example, has already seen its internship windows close and will meet the full-time windows in summer 2027 if they do not hold an internship offer. We expect those full-time dates to look like this year's June to August windows, but no firm has said so.
Check yourself
A student graduates in May 2028 and wants a McKinsey internship before their final year. Which window was theirs, going by the 2026 dates?
How does the timeline differ for MBAs, Europe and experienced hires?
The four tracks below share almost nothing except the firms. Pick yours, and then read the rest of this page with your track's clock in mind.
Timeline by track
Two clocks run side by side. The internship window is the early one, in spring for McKinsey and Bain and by early June for BCG, and it is aimed at students with one summer left before their final year. The full-time window for final-year students came in summer 2026, from BCG's 7 July to McKinsey's 11 August. Bain runs a second internship window at the end of August, which, as we read Bain's US pages, is offered to students who want longer to explore firms and prepare.
Non-MBA master's students tend to sit on the later clock. MIT's page for master's-of-finance students lists BCG on 2 June and 7 July, Bain on 19 July for full-time and 31 August for internships, and McKinsey on 11 August for both, all for the 2026-27 cycle and all for master's students only. Offices differ too: the school page for your campus beats a national list.
First-year MBAs recruit for the summer internship in the autumn: applications in November to December and interviews from January, according to the trackers we read. One projected McKinsey's first-year deadline for 12 November 2026, and we treat that as a projection. Second-year MBAs recruit for full-time roles in August to September, usually before the second year starts. Your school's career centre publishes the real calendar and often controls the application route, so start there.
The practical consequence is that MBA preparation begins before you arrive on campus. A first-year who waits for orientation week to open a case book will be interviewing a few months later, with a term of coursework in between. Check your school's calendar for recruiter events in the first weeks, because the networking clock may start on day one. Pre-MBA programmes at the firms exist and have windows of their own, which are worth a look if you are still applying to schools.
Europe leans towards rolling review, and the calendar changes country by country. A UK guide reported McKinsey's UK graduate portal opening on 1 January 2026 and closing its first round on 29 March, with a reopening expected in autumn. Bain's London university-hiring page, which we opened on 29 September 2026, said the Associate Consultant window closed on 15 October at 23:59 BST, with the online assessment to be finished by midday on 20 October, first-round cases in mid-November and final rounds from late November into early December. The same page lists start dates several times a year.
BCG's UK window was described as opening in autumn and running on a rolling basis, and the one April date we found for it was marked unconfirmed by its source. In Switzerland and Germany BCG's own pages describe a 30-minute cognitive test as an online step, which our guide to the BCG online case compares with the US format. If you are in Europe, the recruiter's page for your country is the only list worth trusting.
Experienced-hire recruiting runs all year and has no campus calendar. Candidate reports on forums say the useful step is a conversation with the recruiter who covers your office and background, because that person decides how and when you enter the process. We could not find a firm page that states a timeline for this track, so this is candidate-reported.
Rolling does not mean relaxed. Because a failed attempt can start a reapplication wait (see the last section), your own readiness sets the deadline: if a recruiter offers you a first-round slot in three weeks, you will want to have finished the preparation before you say yes. Check also whether your school or research group hosts an advanced-degree recruiting event. Those have calendars, and they are often the easiest way in.
What does each firm put between your application and the offer?
The order is broadly the same at all three: application, an online assessment, a first round of interviews, a final round. The firms differ on what the assessment is and how quickly it reaches you. We use the firms' own pages where they give detail (BCG's is the most specific) and candidate reports where they do not, and we say which is which. Assessment formats change between cycles, and none of this replaces the email you receive.
Process by firm
Application first, and you can rank up to three offices on it, according to a secondary guide. Then the McKinsey Solve assessment, which candidate-side sources report arriving within one to seven days, in a 65-minute or an 85-minute version, with a behavioural module added to the games in March 2026. Our McKinsey Solve guide sets out what we could and could not confirm about the format.
After that, first-round interviews are reported as two sessions, each with a case and a personal experience question, and a final round with partners in the same shape. The McKinsey case interview guide and the PEI guide cover those. Reported numbers of sessions vary by office, so ask your recruiter. One point about timing: the same secondary guide says interview slots at busy offices can fill several weeks before the deadline, which is a reason to submit before the last week.
BCG's US page, opened 29 September 2026, is unusually specific. After you apply, an invitation to the Consultant Career Assessment arrives 30 to 90 minutes later, and you have 48 hours to complete it. A selected group is then invited to an online case of about 35 minutes roughly two weeks after the application deadline. The BCG Casey guide covers that online case and the regional variants.
BCG's interview-process page describes a skills interview, a case interview and, for client-facing roles, a team interview. The page does not give timings or round counts, and it does not mention the online steps, so the online steps above come from the US recruiting page and the interview stages from the process page. Read the BCG case interview guide for the live rounds.
Bain describes its process as a digital assessment followed by case interviews. Its own pages give no test details, and candidate reports vary by office and year. The London page we read described a link sent after application covering numerical aptitude, logical reasoning and behavioural preferences. Our Bain online assessment guide sets out what is reported and what is not, and we do not simulate it.
Bain's London process has two rounds, and both consist of case interviews, in person or on video. For the US internship, MIT's master's page reports interviews in September and October for the 31 August window. That compresses the gap between application and first round to a few weeks, so use the wait for the test to keep your case practice going. Our Bain case interview guide covers the format.
One consequence deserves stating on its own. Because BCG's first test arrives within hours and McKinsey's within days according to candidate reports, you are being assessed almost as soon as you press submit. The deadline on the page is the last day you can start being assessed, and your real deadline is the day you are ready to take a test cold.
How early is too early to start preparing for case interviews?
Our position: networking and record-building cannot start too early, but daily case drilling can. Begin conversations four to six months before a window closes, finish the CV and story work about twelve weeks out, start timed cases about eight weeks out and submit two weeks before the deadline. From your first timed case to the first interview that comes to about ten to twelve weeks, and the final five of them should be the hard ones.
The reasons are mixed. Part of it comes from the process: the tests arrive at once, and interview slots at busy offices are reported to fill before the deadline. The rest is opinion, from years of interviewing and from marking practice cases. Someone who starts drilling six months ahead usually has no deadline pressure and no scoring to push against, so they collect frameworks, repeat the same three case types and arrive in the final month tired of it. That is our judgement, not a measured result. Tufts' career centre says summer is no longer early preparation for full-time recruiting, and we agree with the direction while pulling back the start of the daily drills.
A sophomore aiming at a summer-2027 internship will find this absurd, because they applied more than a year before they could start. The calendar is real anyway. For a first-year or sophomore, the useful early work is the kind that only accumulates with time: a quantitative course, a leadership role that lets you describe what you owned, and coffee with two alumni. The full interview gives a quarter of its weight to track record and drive, and no one can cram a record. The scoring guide shows how that part is marked.
Move the sliders to your own numbers. The defaults are our recommendation for a candidate with no case experience.
Move the numbers
How many weeks of case practice do you need?
The 30 hours is the midpoint of the twenty to forty hours in our guide to case interview preparation, and six hours a week sits inside the five to eight hours we suggest during a term. Thirty divided by six is five weeks.
Five weeks is the practice itself. We add three weeks of slack, for exams, illness and the one week everyone loses, which is how you get to eight weeks before the deadline. A candidate who already works with numbers all day can shorten it, and a candidate juggling finals should lengthen it. Nothing in the maths says start six months early; it says the start date depends on the hours you have.
Check yourself
Your target window closes on 29 March. It is 1 January, you have done no cases and had no conversations with anyone at the firm. What is the best plan?
If the quiz made you wonder where you stand today, that is the sensible first step, because a measured baseline sets the number of weeks better than a guess.
How do you build a backwards plan from a deadline?
The method takes ten minutes. Pick the deadline, subtract eight weeks for the first timed case and two weeks for the submission date, then push the CV and story work to twelve weeks out and the outreach to four to six months. After that, check the hours: weeks between first case and submission multiplied by weekly hours has to exceed your target. If it does not, move the start date earlier, not the target down.
Build your own backwards plan
Your target window closes on Monday 29 March 2027. That is an illustrative date, since the real one has not been announced. It is 29 September 2026 now, you can give about six hours a week from January, and you have a 30-hour practice target. Write down the dates for outreach, the finished CV, the first timed case, the submission and the last mock with a person. Then check that the hours add up.
Outreach: 29 September to 29 November 2026 is the four-to-six-month band before 29 March. That is 61 days, so at one twenty-minute conversation every two weeks you have four or five by the end of it. Aim for two of them to be people who work at the firm you want.
Finished CV and fit stories: Monday 4 January 2027, twelve weeks before the deadline. Twelve weeks is 84 days, and 29 March is day 88 of the year, so 88 minus 84 puts you on day 4.
First timed case: Monday 1 February 2027, eight weeks or 56 days out. That is day 32 of the year, the first of February.
Submit: Monday 15 March 2027, two weeks before the deadline.
Hours check: 1 February to 15 March is 42 days, or six weeks. Six weeks at six hours a week is 36 hours, against a 30-hour target. That gives you six spare hours, about one week of slack, and the estimator's five weeks of need fits inside the six weeks available.
Last mock with a person: Sunday 7 March, a week before you submit. Do it live and get a written comment on it, so the fortnight before submission goes on fixing what it found.
If you arrive at 1 February with only three hours a week to spare, the same arithmetic gives 18 hours over six weeks, well short of 30. In that case, move the first case to early January, which gives you ten weeks and 30 hours at three hours a week.
Ten weeks at three hours a week is 30 hours, which is why early January is the fix in that last line. The start date moves with your available hours and with nothing else, so a fixed rule such as "start twelve weeks out" breaks for anyone with exams in the middle of it.
The twelve weeks before a deadline
0 of 10For the practice weeks, our guides on preparing for a case interview and practising alone describe what to do in each session. The fit stories are easier to write after reading how to answer why consulting and why this firm. We are AI coaches and a written guide, and neither is a substitute for a friend who will tell you your delivery is flat, so book at least one human mock.
What if you are late for the cycle?
There are three ways of being late, and each has a different fix. You missed the window; you are inside it but not ready; or you are in a track whose clock has already run for your class. Most people asking the question are in the first group, and for them the answer is usually a later door rather than no door.
- Missed an internship window: look at the next one at the same firm. In 2026 Bain ran a second US internship window on 31 August, and BCG's 2 June window fell well after McKinsey's March one. Some offices review after the stated deadline, and a university-careers newsletter says McKinsey continued reviewing on a rolling basis after 29 March, but confirm that with your recruiter rather than relying on it.
- Missed the internship altogether: apply for the full-time role instead. For the class of 2028 that means the windows we expect in summer 2027. An internship can lead to an offer, but firms hire full-time analysts who did not intern.
- Inside the window but unprepared: do not submit to catch the date. A rushed application that fails the first test costs you the cycle at that firm, and possibly more (see the reapplication section below).
- In an MBA programme and behind: your school's recruiting calendar is the constraint, so talk to the career centre this week. First-year internship applications fall in November to December, and the summer before is your real preparation window.
- A different route: the boutique and economic-consulting firms that career offices list, such as Cornerstone Research, Charles River Associates and Chartwell, are reported to open in August to September and hire through December. They are not MBB, and the interviews still reward the same skills.
If your first interview is close and you have done nothing, our guide to preparing for a case interview has a compressed plan: daily maths drills, four full timed cases, marked, and no reading list. Ten weeks would serve you better, and the compressed plan still beats sitting the interview cold.
We would rather see you wait one cycle than apply badly to three firms. Being a year older with a stronger record is a real advantage in fit interviews, whereas a burned application at a firm you want is the one cost you cannot buy back with hours.
How long do you wait before you reapply?
We could not find a firm page that states one number. What is published is thin, and what circulates is candidate lore. A coaching site updated in July 2026 by a self-described former McKinsey senior consultant gives 18 to 24 months for McKinsey, 12 months for BCG undergraduate and master's candidates and 24 months for Bain, and it says outright that these come from coaching experience and not from firm documents. Forum threads report similar ranges and a shorter wait for candidates the firm keeps in touch with. Treat every one of those figures as a candidate report.
The reliable source is your own rejection email, which candidates report often names a period, and your recruiter, who can say whether a different track counts as a fresh application. Forum reports suggest that moving from an undergraduate application to an MBA or experienced-hire route can restart the clock, but that is again reported and not stated by the firms. Do not apply under another email address or name to get around a restriction. The coaching site above warns that matching runs on identity data, and no source we read suggests a workaround helps.
Our position follows from that: treat each application as one attempt. If a first application fails at the online test or the first round, ask the recruiter for the reapplication rule and the next window that suits you, and spend the wait on the weakest skill in your scorecard. None of the sources we read says a failure at one firm bars you at the other two. That is another reason to sequence your applications rather than send all three on the last day.
Common questions
When do consulting internship applications open?
For US undergraduates in the 2026 cycle, McKinsey's Summer Business Analyst window opened on 1 January and closed on 29 March, Bain's first window closed the same day, and BCG's closed on 2 June. Bain also ran a second window closing on 31 August. MBA internship windows fall in the autumn, and UK and European windows vary by office. Confirm on each firm's careers page, because the dates change every cycle.
What is the McKinsey application deadline for 2027?
McKinsey had not published 2027 dates when we checked on 29 September 2026. Going by 2026, the undergraduate internship window opened on 1 January and closed on 29 March, and the full-time window closed on 11 August. Expect a similar January to March window in 2027 for students graduating between December 2028 and August 2029, but treat that as a projection until McKinsey confirms it.
What is the BCG application deadline?
In the 2026 US undergraduate cycle, career offices list 2 June for the Summer Associate role and 7 July for the full-time Associate role. BCG's own page says those deadlines have passed and shows no future dates. A career office notes that BCG usually announces dates close to the application period, so check the BCG careers page before you plan.
What is the Bain application deadline?
For the US Associate Consultant Intern, Bain ran two windows in 2026, closing on 29 March and 31 August, and asks applicants to be on track to graduate by June 2028. The full-time deadline was 19 July for most listings, although Bain's Cornell page shows 11 October. Bain London listed a 15 October close. Deadlines vary by school and office, so use the page for yours.
When should I start preparing for case interviews?
Start networking four to six months before your window closes, finish the CV and fit stories about twelve weeks out, and begin timed case practice about eight weeks before the deadline. Thirty focused hours at six hours a week is five weeks of practice, so eight weeks leaves slack. Submit two weeks early, because the first online test arrives within hours or days of applying.
What is the MBA consulting recruiting timeline?
First-year MBAs recruit for the summer internship in the autumn, with applications around November to December and interviews from January. Second-year MBAs recruit for full-time roles around August to September. Your school's career centre publishes the actual calendar, and preparation should begin before you arrive on campus. Dates quoted by trackers are often projections, so treat them as such.
Is it too late to apply if the deadline has passed?
Sometimes not. Check the firm's next window, which for Bain's US internship in 2026 was a second round on 31 August, and ask your recruiter whether the office reviews after the deadline. If no route is open, look at the full-time role or the next cycle. Do not submit a rushed application only to catch a date, because a failed attempt can start a reapplication wait.
How long do I have to wait to reapply after a rejection?
No firm page we found states a single period. Coaching sites and forums report ranges from about 12 to 24 months depending on the firm and the level, and rejection emails often name a period. Read your own email and ask your recruiter, and treat every figure elsewhere as a candidate report rather than firm policy.
